I met Mike months back at a Red Robin (yum) in Columbus. It was a meeting set up by my buddy Nick, who was helping Mike at the time. Since we all had mutual interests in the world of tabletop gaming, it only seemed fitting that we all got together and talked shop. When I spoke with Mike, I was extremely impressed with his passion and determination. And to be honest, he reminded me a lot of myself. No, he’s not a large burly man. It was a number of ideas that flowed out of him and the fact that these ideas kept him up at night.
We talked about collaborating on some projects in the future and networking, which I thought was incredibly smart, especially in this fast-paced word. What was interesting is when I had spoken with Mike, he was in the early phase of a game he’d been working on. He then went quiet for a few months. At the time, I was incredibly busy trying to get all my ducks in a row, so I didn’t inquire about what he was up to. Well, it turns out he was hammering out the concept, design, and even the logistics of his new game: Gods of Tyn Harra.
Suddenly, Mike emerged back into the scene with a new company: Ogre Foot Ltd. In the amount of time it took me to get the website in order, strategize where this endeavor will take me, and to round up contributors, Mike had launched a company, a website, and he’s taking his game to Kickstarter. I do have to say, I am thoroughly impressed!
There are a lot of people out there who say they’re going to do something and never see it through. Mike is definitely not one of those people! He set his goals, put his heart into it, and went out there and got the ball rolling. To be honest, I am very happy to see the work Mike is doing because it shows me that the dream does exist: you can go out there and achieve what you want as long as you put in the time and effort!
What is Ogre Foot Ltd. about? Here is what the website says:
“OGRE FOOT is breaking into the gaming world with a selection of games based in the world of TYN HARRA. This work will include several games and expansions of different types. Although the company is new, the games are not. These games have been in development for years and you can count on play testing being a heavy requirement prior to releasing a game.”
Review of Gods of Tyn Harra
Gods of Tyn Harra is Ogre Foot Ltd.’s first game that is getting ready to go to Kickstarter. The game is very familiar yet very new at the same time. Once you learn the rules, which are very intuitive and quick to pick up, you are immersed into the fantastical world of Tyn Harra, where gods battle it out and its inhabitants are caught in the turbulence of it all.
Here are the traits of Gods of Tyn Harra:
- Every game is different
- Learn in 5 Minutes
- Fast Rounds
- Action Packed
- Several Expansions in development
- Expansion Co-op Campaigns in development
The interesting thing about the game is its directional flow of combat and defense; you must attack the person to your left and defend against the person to your right. This dynamic further balances the game and adds to its uniqueness. The directional dynamic of the game ties in with the world of Tyn Harra and its vortex of energy that flows clockwise. And it’s because of this powerful force that the both the inhabitants and gods of Tyn Harra use the vortex to their advantage.
The game has the familiarity of a deck-building game, like Ascension or Dominion, but with the added depth of character cards, abilities, and combat. It takes the things that people love in tabletop games and combines them together into an amalgamation of awesomeness!
I highly recommend you check out the Kickstarter for Gods of Tyn Harra! This is a game that you can sit down with friends or take it to your local game shop and invite people to play!
Interview with Ogre Foot Ltd.’s founder: Mike Hopper
Since Mike is such an interesting and passionate person, I thought it would be awesome to do a little Q&A with him! It’s always interesting to get some insight into people that share a passion for creating things!
Q: What were you doing before you started working on games?
A: I was and still am doing software development. Once OGRE FOOT can pay the bills I will develop and publish games full time.
Q: What inspired Ogre Foot?
A: I wanted to both design and publish games so I started a game company called OGRE FOOT Ltd. I have reached a point in my life where I am comfortable taking risks and breaking into the gaming industry comes with risks, specifically financial risks because I am investing a lot of money into OGRE FOOT. The reward being, I work on OGREFOOT full time for the rest of my life. That’s the best reward I can receive.
Q: How long have you been working on Gods of Tyn Harra?
A: Gods of TYN HARRA popped into my brain in late 2014 and I had a playable prototype sometime in 2015. I have more than 2 years of development and playtesting in this game.
Q: What plans do you have for games in the future?
A: Do you have a couple days for me to explain? Seriously though, I have so many games written down in my “Book of Secrets” just waiting to come to life. I just need the time and play testers to get them to everyone’s table. As of now, I am finishing the expansion for Gods of TYN HARRA called “Chaos” which will feature two new factions, Humans and Vahar. I’m also working on the one player variant that’s going to be a stretch goal on the Kickstarter Campaign for Gods of TYN HARRA. I also have a campaign mode in development for Gods of TYN HARRA so it can become a co-op game. This will be separate from the Kickstarter and will be released in 2018. Gods of TYN HARRA is going to become a very large and highly expandable game in the TYN HARRA universe. I have a worker placement game, that’s set in the world of TYN HARRA, in development as well. I’m not sure of the order in which all the games will finish development, it just depends on how well Gods of TYN HARRA takes off and which game is both closest to being finished and the most fun to play.
Q: Any final thoughts?
A: I am very passionate about playing games and developing games. I have invested a lot of money into OGRE FOOT and Gods of TYN HARRA. I would not put out a game that is not fun or completely tested because I don’t want to waste the money of the people buying the game nor do I want to waste my money on something that will not be a great game. I have had a ton of positive feedback from both friends and all the other play testers I had not met prior to them playing Gods of TYN HARRA. I will earn the confidence of gamers, I just need the time and resources and this month’s Kickstarter for Gods of TYN HARRA is the first step.
